Julius Caesar, 1953, as Mark Antony
Cast: Louis Calhern, James Mason
Director: Joseph L. Mankiewicz

Rating

Factoid
– Despite the Oscar nominations and reams of press clippings that hailed Brando as the greatest film actor, he had loud detractors as well. Some highly regarded critics were immune to Brando magic; they saw him only as a brooding, mumbling slob and predicted that his nasal delivery would desecrate Shakespeare’s prose – Brando proved them all wrong!
– At the conclusion of the famous “Friends, Romans, countymen, lend me your ears…” speech, which is delivered to the Roman throngs following Caesar’s assasination, – following eight takes – Brando received a rousing ovation from fellow cast members John Geilgud, James Mason, Deborah Kerr and Greer Garson. This scene is one of my favorite scenes and I’m sure is one of the greatest scenes ever (don’t miss it, if you haven’t seen this one yet)!
– Julius Caesar was released in the late summer of 1953 to box office and fine reviews.
– Brando won another Academy Award nomination.
– Brando won the “Best Foreign Actor” British Academy Award for this movie.
– Marlon was pleased by his good notices for Julius Caesar and the Oscar nomination his work earned, but he never attempted another classical role.
